Light Rain Predicted in Delhi Today; Heatwave Alert for Punjab, Haryana from April 14: IMD
Residents of Delhi may experience some relief from the ongoing heatwave as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain and thunderstorms for Thursday. According to the latest forecast, the national capital is likely to witness cloudy skies, gusty winds, and scattered rainfall over April 10 and 11.
The IMD stated that while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 41 degrees Celsius, the presence of thunderstorms and lightning will offer a brief respite from the high temperatures. Strong surface winds, with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph and gusts up to 50 kmph, may accompany the weather activity.
“The sky is likely to remain generally cloudy with very light rain or drizzle in some areas,” said an IMD official. The conditions are expected to remain partly cloudy on April 12 as well.
While Delhi receives some relief, parts of northwest India are bracing for a renewed heatwave spell. The IMD has issued a heatwave alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan beginning April 14 and continuing through April 15.
In the interim, light rain and thunderstorms may affect parts of these regions. For Punjab and Haryana, the IMD has predicted a partly cloudy sky and a chance of rain, thunderstorms, or dust storms on April 10 and 11. Rajasthan is also expected to see similar weather patterns, with temporary relief forecasted through April 12.
Despite the light precipitation, rising temperatures are likely to intensify again over the weekend. “A fresh heatwave spell is expected in parts of northwest India from April 14 onward,” the IMD said in its bulletin.
In western and central India, the heatwave continues to grip Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where high temperatures are forecast to persist through April 10. Weather officials, however, anticipate a slight drop in mercury levels following this period.
Meanwhile, eastern and northeastern parts of India are witnessing ongoing rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. This wet spell is expected to last until April 12, bringing continued relief from high temperatures in these regions.
While some areas across India are set to benefit from temporary relief in the form of light rain and thunderstorms, large parts of the country particularly in the northwest are expected to face a resurgence of extreme heat.
