Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Hits Nepal, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Nepal on Friday evening, with tremors felt across parts of northern India, including the Delhi-NCR region. The quake, which occurred at 7:52 pm local time, was recorded at a depth of 20 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). No immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged.

The seismic activity comes just days after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar on March 28, causing widespread destruction and claiming over 3,000 lives. That quake, one of the deadliest in the region in recent years, also left more than 4,500 people injured and hundreds missing.

Several residents in northern India, including Delhi-NCR, reported feeling mild tremors. Many took to social media to describe their experiences, with some expressing concerns over recurring seismic activity in the region. However, authorities have assured there is no cause for alarm and urged people to remain vigilant.

The Myanmar quake, which struck near the country’s central region, caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, with tremors felt as far as China, Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of India. Roads developed large cracks, and several buildings collapsed, leading to fears of aftershocks.

Local media reports suggest that the casualty figures in Myanmar may be significantly higher than official estimates, as rescue operations continue in difficult conditions. Telecommunications remain disrupted in many areas, complicating relief efforts.

Nepal and Myanmar are both located in seismically active zones, making them particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. Nepal, in particular, has a history of devastating quakes, including the 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people and displaced thousands.

Seismologists have warned that the region remains at risk for further tremors, urging governments to strengthen disaster preparedness measures. While Friday’s Nepal quake was relatively mild, experts caution that continued seismic activity could signal the possibility of larger quakes in the future.

Authorities in Nepal and India are monitoring the situation closely, and disaster response teams are on standby in case of any developments.
