Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has publicly expressed regret and apologized to the people of the state for the ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. The conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has resulted in the loss of lives, displacement of thousands, and extensive property damage.

Addressing the state, CM Biren Singh described 2023 as an “unfortunate” year and extended his heartfelt apologies. “Many people lost their loved ones, and many had to leave their homes. I truly feel regret and want to say sorry to the people of Manipur,” Singh stated.

Expressing hope for the coming year, Singh called on all communities to unite and move forward. “We must forget past mistakes and start anew. A peaceful and prosperous Manipur is possible if we live together harmoniously,” he added.

The violence began in May 2023, with tensions escalating between the Meitei community, based in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo groups from the adjoining hills. The conflict further intensified in June when a man’s death in the Jiribam district sparked widespread unrest, including arson, gunfights, and the torching of homes.

Over 250 people have been killed, and thousands have been rendered homeless due to the ongoing conflict. Many displaced families remain in relief camps, while efforts to restore normalcy continue. The violence has led to the internal displacement of more than 1,000 individuals, compounding the state’s humanitarian challenges.

The conflict has also seen the influx of Myanmar-manufactured weapons, bulletproof vests, and military fatigues. Security forces have been actively recovering these items from militants and their hideouts, highlighting concerns over cross-border smuggling from Myanmar.

As the state moves forward, CM Singh expressed optimism for 2025, emphasizing the progress made in recent months toward peace. He urged communities to collaborate in rebuilding a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.
