Meerut Police Warn of Passport, Licence Cancellation for Offering Namaz on Roads Ahead of Eid

Meerut Police on Thursday issued a stern warning against offering namaz on roads, stating that violators could face legal action, including cancellation of passports and driving licences. The directive comes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and the last Friday prayers of Ramzan, with authorities emphasizing that prayers must be confined to mosques or designated Eidgahs. Enhanced security measures, including drone surveillance and increased police deployment, have been put in place across Uttar Pradesh to maintain law and order.
Meerut Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh instructed that Eid prayers should only be offered at local mosques or designated Eidgahs, prohibiting road prayers. Meerut SSP Vipin Tada added, “Strict action will be taken against those trying to spread rumours or incite unrest through social media.” He confirmed that the police are closely monitoring social media to prevent any disruption of communal harmony.
To ensure safety, Meerut has deployed Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, alongside flag marches in the district. In Lucknow, Joint Commissioner of Police Babloo Kumar stated, “More than 1,000 police personnel and nine PAC companies have been deployed for Alvida Namaz, with CCTV and drone monitoring.” Traffic diversions and peace committee meetings with religious leaders have also been organized to maintain order.
Union Minister Jayant Singh Chaudhary highlighted the legal repercussions, saying, “If criminal cases are registered, passports and licences can be cancelled, and obtaining a new passport would require a court-issued NOC.” He added that both uniformed and plainclothes officers will be stationed at sensitive locations, with drones aiding aerial surveillance to monitor the situation.
With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, authorities across Uttar Pradesh are on high alert to prevent any incidents of road prayers, as seen in related web results from Sambhal and other areas. The police will continue to work with religious leaders to ensure compliance, while maintaining strict surveillance. Further updates on security arrangements and compliance are expected as the festival nears.
