Meghalaya Murder: Sonam Used Fake ‘Sanjay Verma’ ID in 234 Calls Before Husband’s Killing

Sonam Raghuvanshi, arrested for the brutal murder of her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May, made 234 calls between March 1 and April 8 to a number saved as “Sanjay Verma.” Police now confirm the identity was fabricated by her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, as revealed by Meghalaya officials on Wednesday.
Police say Sonam talked for 30–60 minutes in late-night and early-morning hours, pointing to a deep connection with Kushwaha before and after her May 11 wedding. The sheer frequency and timing of the calls indicate a clandestine affair that may have fueled the murder plot.
Raja’s body, found decomposed on June 2 in a gorge under Wei Sawdong Falls, was the result of a premeditated murder allegedly carried out by three hitmen hired by Kushwaha, with Sonam allegedly present.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Shillong travelled to Indore to interrogate Sonam’s family and Kushwaha’s relatives. They also searched his apartment. Meghalaya’s SP Vivek Syiem confirmed, “Sanjay Verma” was a sham identity used to conceal Kushwaha’s communications.
SIT chief Poonam Chand Yadav told reporters, “Sonam was present at the scene and watched her husband die.” Investigators note that the call records, combined with mobility data placing Sonam at the murder site, strongly point to her active role.
Authorities are exploring financial motives tied to Kushwaha and potential third-person involvement. Meanwhile, Sonam’s brother and mother remain in police custody for questioning.
The case has drawn national media attention and social media debates. Users questioned Sonam’s emotional farewell video—some calling it “a shocking display of feigned grief” and unsettlingly premeditated.
As the probe continues into Kushwaha’s motives and possible financial gains, the shocking revelations indict networks of betrayal and deceit that led to Raja’s killing.
