Tripura Student Found Dead in Yamuna After Missing Six Days in Delhi

Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student from Tripura who had been missing in Delhi for six days, was found dead in the Yamuna river near Geeta Colony on Sunday, police confirmed. Sneha, a second-year B.Sc. Mathematics student at Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, had been missing since July 7 after she left home early in the morning, telling her mother she was going to drop a friend at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station.
According to the missing person’s complaint filed by her elder sister, Bipasha Debnath, Sneha left home around 5:15 a.m. after booking a cab driven by Subhe Chandra. Later, the family learned from the driver that he had dropped Sneha at Signature Bridge in Wazirabad, where she had reportedly intended to jump, as indicated by a note shared with the family.
When the family tried to contact Sneha around 8:45 a.m., her phone was switched off. Bipasha said they initially suspected kidnapping, as there was no sign of Sneha at Signature Bridge. Poor CCTV coverage in the area made it difficult for the police to track her movements after she exited the cab.
Following her disappearance, Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) launched a large-scale search across a seven-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna, from Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida. Eyewitnesses had told police they saw a girl standing on the bridge before she went missing.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had taken note of the case, directing the police to take immediate action to locate Sneha. “The report of Miss Sneha Debnath, a resident of Sabroom, who has reportedly gone missing in New Delhi, has come to the notice of the Chief Minister’s Office. Necessary instructions have been promptly issued to the police to take immediate and appropriate action,” Saha posted on social media.
On Sunday, Sneha’s body was recovered from the Yamuna near Geeta Colony, and it has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police officials said investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
