Case Filed Against Shinde Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for Assaulting Canteen Staff in Mumbai

Mumbai Police has initiated action against Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) MLA Sanjay Gaikwad after a video showing him physically assaulting a canteen worker at the Akashwani MLA residence in Mumbai went viral, triggering outrage on social media.
The police confirmed on Friday that the process of registering a non-cognizable offence (NC) against Gaikwad is underway. The incident occurred when Gaikwad, a two-term legislator from Buldana, confronted the canteen staff over allegedly stale dal and rice, claiming he felt unwell after consuming the food.
In the video, Gaikwad is seen berating the canteen operator, refusing to pay the bill, and slapping a staffer seated at the billing counter while accusing the contractor of serving poor-quality food. The MLA alleged that the canteen had a history of unhygienic practices, claiming that rats and lizards had previously been found in the food served there.
Speaking to reporters later, Gaikwad remained unapologetic about his actions, stating that he acted in the “Shiv Sena style” taught by the party’s founder, Balasaheb Thackeray. “If someone does not understand the language of democracy, this is my language. I am a warrior,” he said, adding that he would repeat the act if necessary.
The incident sparked debate over the conduct of public representatives. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, responding to the controversy, said the police would investigate the matter without waiting for a formal complaint. “There is no need for a complaint to be filed. If a cognizable offence is committed, the police will take appropriate action,” he stated, adding that the extent of force used would determine the nature of the case.
Following the incident, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) suspended the licence of Ajanta Caterers, which operated the canteen at the MLA hostel, citing violations and concerns over food quality.
The incident has highlighted the issues of food safety in government-run facilities while raising concerns about elected representatives taking the law into their own hands. Public reactions on social media were mixed, with some criticising Gaikwad’s methods while others pointed out the recurring issue of unhygienic food at public canteens.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing as Mumbai Police examines the viral video and statements from those present during the altercation at the MLA hostel.
