Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai, IMD Issues Orange Alert; Flights, Traffic Hit

Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the city while warning of continued downpours over the next four days. The IMD also issued an orange alert for Thane and Pune, a red alert for Raigad, and a yellow alert for Palghar.

The IMD stated that light to moderate rain is expected across many parts of Mumbai, with isolated heavy spells, thunder, lightning, and strong winds likely in some areas. An orange alert signifies expected heavy rain between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Due to heavy rainfall, waterlogging was reported in several parts of Mumbai, creating difficulties for commuters. The Mumbai Traffic Police announced the closure of the Andheri Subway due to two feet of water accumulation, diverting traffic via the Gokhale Bridge.

The Mumbai Police urged citizens to avoid coastal and low-lying areas while assuring that officials remain on standby to assist residents. “Our officials and staff are alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. Dial 100 / 112 / 103 in case of any emergency,” the police posted on X.

Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were impacted by the heavy downpour, with airlines advising passengers to allow extra travel time and check flight statuses before heading to the airport.

IndiGo informed travellers about temporary disruptions to its schedules due to the downpour, while SpiceJet cautioned passengers about delays in departures and arrivals, advising them to check real-time updates on the airline’s website. Akasa Air also issued an advisory warning of potential waterlogging and slow-moving traffic in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, and Kolkata, asking travellers to plan additional travel time to avoid missing flights.

The heavy rainfall comes as Mumbai continues to experience its monsoon peak, with drainage and traffic issues often reported during intense spells of rain. The IMD has advised people to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather developments.
