IndiGo Aircraft's Tail Strikes Mumbai Runway Amid Bad Weather, Lands Safely After Second Attempt

An IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft’s tail touched the runway at Mumbai Airport on Saturday morning while attempting a low-altitude go-around due to adverse weather conditions. The plane, arriving from Bangkok, subsequently made a second approach and landed safely, averting a major incident. Following the landing, the aircraft has been grounded for necessary checks and repairs before it can resume operations.

An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed the incident in a statement: “On August 16, 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavourable weather conditions in Mumbai. Thereafter, the aircraft carried out another approach and landed safely.

Following the standard protocol, the aircraft will go through necessary checks/repairs and regulatory clearance before resuming operations.” The airline reiterated its commitment to safety, stating, “At IndiGo, the safety of our customers, crew, and aircraft is our top priority. We are making all efforts to minimise any subsequent impact on our operations due to this incident.”

Sources close to the matter indicated that the aircraft executed the go-around seconds before touchdown on runway 27 and that its tail struck the runway due to being below the permissible limit. There were also reports of debris being left on the runway, which was promptly communicated to the airport operator. The role of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in the incident is also reportedly under scrutiny.

This incident marks another occurrence of a tail strike for IndiGo. In March, an IndiGo Airbus A321 experienced a tail strike while landing at Chennai airport, an incident that prompted an investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Earlier, in September of the previous year, another IndiGo A321, on a flight from Delhi to Bengaluru, also suffered a tail strike during landing, leading to the crew being taken off duty pending an investigation.
