Kunal Kamra Summoned by Mumbai Police Over Eknath Shinde ‘Traitor’ Joke Controversy

The Khar police in Mumbai summoned comedian Kunal Kamra on Tuesday for his controversial remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, where he called the leader a “traitor” in a parody song. Kamra has been asked to appear before the investigating officer at 11 am, even as a viral audio clip revealed he may be in Tamil Nadu. The summons follows protests and vandalism by Shiv Sena workers over the comedian’s comments.

Kamra was summoned by the Khar police after his performance at an event, where he used a Bollywood parody song to label Shinde a “traitor” for his 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray. The notice was sent to his Mumbai residence, though sources suggest Kamra is currently not in the city, with a recent audio clip indicating his presence in Tamil Nadu.

A 53-second audio clip circulating on social media captured a heated exchange between Kamra and an alleged Shiv Sena worker. In the clip, the caller threatens to “beat up” Kamra, who responds by saying he is in Tamil Nadu. The worker then vows to travel to the state to confront him, escalating concerns over the comedian’s safety amid the ongoing row.

Kamra’s remarks, made during a comedy show, sparked outrage among Shinde’s supporters, leading to vandalism at the event venue by Shiv Sena workers. The incident has drawn significant attention, with political leaders weighing in on the boundaries of free speech. A police case has already been registered against Kamra based on a Shiv Sena complaint.

Kamra’s response to the summons remains uncertain, given his reported absence from Mumbai. The investigation is expected to intensify, with authorities likely to probe the threats made against him. The controversy continues to fuel debates on freedom of expression, with further developments anticipated as the case progresses.
