Trustees of Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital have uncovered eight urns with human bones, hair, and rice, alleging black magic rituals on the premises, alongside a Rs 1,250 crore embezzlement case against former trustees. The startling claims follow a forensic audit revealing financial irregularities.

The current trustees reported finding eight urns buried under their office floor, containing human remains and items linked to occult practices. The excavation, prompted by former employees’ tips, was recorded on video for evidence. This comes amid allegations of a massive fraud by ex-trustees, escalating the hospital’s ongoing controversy.

The Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust filed an embezzlement case against 17 individuals, including seven former trustees. A forensic audit uncovered over Rs 1,250 crore siphoned through fake orders and records over two decades. Three FIRs have been lodged, with additional complaints of tax evasion and theft under investigation.

A separate complaint under the Maharashtra Anti-Black Magic Act was filed after staff reported rituals targeting trustee Prashant Mehta and his mother, Charu. The trust claims these were orchestrated by former trustees. Chetan Mehta, son of ex-trustee Vijay Mehta, dismissed the claims, saying, “The black magic allegations do not even merit a response.”

The controversy traces back to 2002 when Vijay Mehta allegedly took control of the trust during his brother Kishore Mehta’s medical treatment abroad. Vijay is accused of forging documents to appoint relatives as trustees. A legal battle ensued, resolved in 2016, with Prashant Mehta taking over as permanent trustee after his father’s death in 2024.

Prashant Mehta ordered a forensic audit upon assuming control, revealing large-scale financial misappropriation. The findings prompted multiple FIRs and complaints to the Enforcement Directorate for further probe. The trust alleges the fraud impacted the hospital’s operations and healthcare services.

Chetan Mehta rejected the black magic and fraud allegations, calling them baseless and sensationalist. The former trustees maintain their innocence, framing the accusations as a malicious attempt to tarnish their reputation. The legal standoff between the two sides continues to intensify.

Authorities are investigating both the financial fraud and black magic claims, with the Bandra court overseeing the latter. The outcome of the forensic audit and ongoing probes could reshape Lilavati Hospital’s future. Further developments are expected as police and the Enforcement Directorate deepen their inquiries.
