Maharashtra’s financial troubles are deepening, with the state’s fiscal deficit climbing fast, putting a key election promise in jeopardy. The Economic Survey reveals a 10% jump in debt, from Rs 7,11,278 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 7,82,991 crore in 2024-25. This rise has sparked doubts about whether the promised ₹2,100 monthly payout under the Ladki Bahin scheme will make it into the budget set for March 10.

The Ladki Bahin scheme, launched in 2024 by the Mahayuti government, offers ₹1,500 monthly to eligible women aged 21-65 from low-income families. During last year’s assembly polls, the ruling alliance pledged to hike this to ₹2,100—a promise that helped secure their landslide win. But with a revenue deficit now exceeding Rs 2 lakh crore, partly blamed on the scheme’s costs, the state is scrambling to balance its books.

On Wednesday, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare addressed the issue in the assembly. She confirmed that January and February payments of ₹1,500 would hit bank accounts on Women’s Day, March 8. When pressed on the ₹2,100 hike, Tatkare said, “Our manifesto promised it, and it’s valid for five years. The funds will flow when the CM and Deputy CM decide.” Her vague timeline has left many skeptical.

The scheme’s financial strain is clear. It costs Rs 46,000 crore yearly, and Rs 900 crore has already gone to ineligible recipients. Around 15 lakh women have been cut from the list, with up to 25 lakh more potentially facing the axe. This has fueled anger among beneficiaries who feel misled after the polls.

Monday’s budget will be a make-or-break moment. With Maharashtra’s debt soaring and experts warning of cuts to welfare programs, the ₹2,100 payout looks shaky. Posts on X reflect growing frustration, with some calling it an “election stunt.” For now, all eyes are on CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar to see if they can deliver—or if fiscal reality will force a retreat.
