Heavy overnight rains lashed Mumbai on Thursday, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and causing significant traffic disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “yellow alert,” warning of continued rainfall until August 18 and advising residents to remain cautious.

The downpour, which began Wednesday evening and intensified overnight, affected daily life across the metropolis. Areas in the western suburbs, including Borivali, Malad, Kandivali, Goregaon, and Andheri, experienced consistent moderate to heavy showers. Other parts of the city like Bandra, Dadar, Worli, and Chembur were also hit with heavy spells, while South Mumbai saw intermittent showers.

The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain for Thursday, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. The forecast predicts moderate rain for August 15 and 16, followed by another spell of heavy rain on August 17. Rain is expected to continue throughout the day on August 18 and 19.

On a positive note, the consistent rainfall has significantly boosted the water levels in the seven lakes that supply water to the city. According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the lakes—Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Vehar, Tulsi, and Middle Vaitarna—are now collectively filled to almost 90% of their total capacity, holding approximately 12.91 lakh million litres of usable water, which is a reassuring sign for the city’s water supply.
