Mumbai Rains: Heavy Downpour Lashes City, Orange Alert Issued For Today

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Mumbai on Monday morning, prompting the weather department to issue an orange alert for the city and its surrounding regions, including Thane and Raigad. The forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, raising concerns about potential waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The city has been experiencing significant rainfall since Sunday. Between 8:30 AM on September 14 and 5:30 AM on September 15, the Colaba weather station recorded the highest rainfall at 88.2 mm, followed by Bandra with 82.0 mm and Byculla with 73.0 mm. Other areas like Juhu, Santacruz, and Mahalaxmi also received moderate to heavy spells.

The continuous downpour led to early morning alerts from independent weather forecasters, with one predicting “non stop heavy rains” and likely waterlogging across South-Central Mumbai.

Social media was abuzz with images and videos from residents capturing the intensity of the monsoon. Visuals from Sion, Malad, and Chembur showed streets inundated with water and citizens navigating the deluge. The heavy rainfall has also impacted other parts of Maharashtra, with an orange alert issued for Pune, Satara, Beed, and Latur.

As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in the Pune suburbs have been declared closed for the day. Mumbaikars are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions while commuting.
