Mumbai’s Habitat Studio Shuts Down After Sena Workers’ Vandalism Over Kunal Kamra Row

Mumbai’s Habitat Studio has announced its temporary closure following vandalism by Shiv Sena workers, triggered by comedian Kunal Kamra’s remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The studio, where Kamra’s show was recorded, expressed shock and urged stakeholders to help find a path for safe artistic expression.

The Habitat Studio in Mumbai faced severe damage after Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) workers ransacked the premises, protesting Kamra’s alleged defamatory comments against Shinde. An FIR has also been lodged against the comedian. In response, the studio decided to shut down temporarily to reassess its operations.

In a social media post, Habitat Studio expressed distress over the incident. “We are shocked, worried, and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us,” the statement read. It clarified that the studio does not control artists’ content but often faces blame as a proxy for performers.

The studio announced it would remain closed until a safer way to support free expression is found. “We invite all artists, audience, and stakeholders to discuss and share their views freely,” the post stated, seeking guidance on balancing performers’ rights with the venue’s safety.

As Habitat Studio evaluates its next steps, the incident raises broader questions about the safety of artistic venues amid political controversies. Further updates on the studio’s reopening and the ongoing row involving Kamra are awaited.
