Omar Abdullah Announces ₹10 Lakh Ex-Gratia for Victims of Pakistan Shelling
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced ₹10 lakh relief for families of those killed in Pakistan’s cross-border shelling, calling it a gesture of support and solidarity.
In a strong show of solidarity with the victims of Saturday’s cross-border shelling, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared an ex-gratia relief of ₹10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
“While no compensation can ever replace a loved one or heal the trauma caused to the family, as a gesture of support and solidarity, ₹10 lakh will be provided to families of deceased,” Omar said in an official statement.
He expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families and minimizing civilian hardship during the ongoing crisis.
The Chief Minister visited several areas in Jammu impacted by the shelling, including Rehari and Roop Nagar, where he met with residents and assessed the extent of the damage. Speaking to locals, he assured swift rehabilitation efforts and additional relief measures.
“The pain and disruption faced by residents is deeply concerning. We stand with every affected family and will ensure all necessary support is provided without delay,” Omar stated during his visit.
Earlier, he visited the home of Rajouri Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Raj Kumar Thapa, a J&K administrative officer martyred in the shelling. Offering condolences, Omar described Thapa’s death as a tragic loss for the state.
Omar Abdullah said the administration is “vigilant and proactive” in coordinating emergency response efforts and safety measures in vulnerable regions along the Line of Control.
“My government is taking every possible measure to minimise the hardships of our people,” he emphasized.
Local authorities have been mobilized to provide medical aid, temporary shelters, and logistical support in affected zones.
The relief announcement comes amid renewed tensions along the India-Pakistan border, with intense shelling reported from multiple sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. Civilian areas have suffered collateral damage, with several casualties reported in the last 48 hours.
This surge in violence follows a fragile ceasefire agreement that was reportedly violated within hours of its announcement, further straining bilateral relations.
With security forces on high alert and diplomatic communications ongoing, the situation remains tense. Meanwhile, the J&K administration has vowed to maintain a humanitarian focus in its response, providing immediate aid and long-term support to the affected families.
