In a move that has drawn widespread attention, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts to bridge the “dil ki doori” (distance of hearts) and “Dilli ki doori” (distance from Delhi) during the inauguration of the Sonamarg Tunnel. This gesture comes at a time when Abdullah has sharpened his criticism of the Congress, a major ally in the INDIA bloc, raising questions about shifting political dynamics.

Praise Amid Political Uncertainty

Omar Abdullah commended PM Modi’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir, lauding the absence of irregularities. Abdullah expressed hope that the Centre would soon restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating a long-standing demand.

“You kept your word and ensured elections were conducted within four months, free of complaints about misuse of power. This strengthens our belief in your promise to restore statehood soon,” Abdullah stated.

Tensions in the INDIA Bloc

The praise is particularly significant given Abdullah’s recent dissatisfaction with the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties. Abdullah called for the alliance to be dissolved post-Lok Sabha elections unless its purpose extended to Assembly polls. His criticism of Congress’s leadership role has fueled speculation about growing rifts within the opposition camp.

Last week, Abdullah remarked, “The alliance lacks clarity and coordination, especially post-elections. If it’s only for Lok Sabha elections, end it. If it’s to continue for Assembly polls, we need better cooperation.”

Congress Under Scrutiny

Abdullah’s remarks follow his National Conference’s strong performance in the recent J&K Assembly elections, where it won 42 of 51 contested seats. In contrast, the Congress secured only 6 of 32 seats. Abdullah suggested the alliance with Congress was not crucial to their victory, deepening doubts about their collaboration.

Impact on Political Equations

Abdullah’s appreciation of Modi’s efforts highlights emerging cracks in the INDIA bloc and underscores his growing unease with the Congress. As opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin accuse the Centre of undermining federal governance, Abdullah’s stance signals a potential realignment of alliances.

Omar Abdullah’s remarks reflect a complex political landscape, with changing alliances and strategic gestures reshaping equations. His praise for PM Modi amid criticism of the INDIA bloc adds a new dimension to the political narrative, one that will undoubtedly influence discussions in the coming months
