‘Op Sindoor a Historic Example in Fight Against Terror’: President Murmu in I-Day Address
In the address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu hailed “Operation Sindoor” as a historic and landmark example in the global fight against terrorism, underscoring India’s “steely resolve” in its response to the Pahalgam terror attack. She described the operation as a testament to the nation’s unity and the growing self-reliance of its defence sector.
Terming the April 22 attack on innocent citizens in Pahalgam “cowardly and utterly inhuman,” President Murmu said India’s response was decisive and firm. “Operation Sindoor showed that our armed forces are prepared to meet any eventuality when it comes to guarding the nation,” she stated, adding that the operation would “go down in history as an example in humanity’s fight against terrorism”. The President emphasized that the unity displayed by the country in the aftermath of the attack was the “most befitting response to those who wanted to divide us”.
Operation Sindoor was the swift military action launched by India on May 7 following the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. It involved precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which neutralized over 100 terrorists. The operation also saw India successfully defend against retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Pakistan.
The President also highlighted the strategic implications of the operation, noting that “the world has taken note of India’s stance that we will not be aggressor but will also not hesitate to retaliate in defence of our citizens”. She described the mission as a successful “test case of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in the defence sector,” which proved that India’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities are on the right path to achieving self-sufficiency in meeting security needs. The operation showcased the effectiveness of indigenous systems like the Akash and BrahMos missiles.
