Pahalgam Terror Attack : PM Modi Dials Amit Shah After, Urges Swift Action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following a deadly terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam.
At least one tourist was killed and over 20 injured after suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives opened fire in the Bainsram meadows of southern Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The Resistance Front (TRF), an LeT offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Prime Minister, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia, was briefed by Shah over the phone. Following the conversation, Shah announced plans to fly to Srinagar for an urgent security review.
“Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared. We will come down heavily on the perpetrators,” the Home Minister said in a post on social media.
Shah confirmed he held a video conference with top officials and assured that stringent action will follow.
Eyewitnesses said at least two armed assailants in fatigue opened fire on a group of tourists without provocation. Videos showed panicked civilians fleeing as gunshots rang out. One woman, visibly shaken, pleaded with rescue personnel to save her husband, who had been shot.
The injured were evacuated on ponies and by chopper from the difficult terrain. Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched a combing operation.
The attack coincides with US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to India, drawing sharp international focus on the region’s security situation.
This is the second major terror-related incident in Kashmir this month, raising concerns about the rising threat to civilians and tourists.
With Shah set to hold high-level security meetings in Srinagar, agencies are on high alert. Official sources say a multi-agency crackdown on TRF-linked modules is likely in the coming days.
