Parliament’s Monsoon Session from July 21 to August 12; Op Sindoor, Judge’s Impeachment on Agenda
The Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from July 21 to August 12, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday. This will be the first full session following ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s counter-terrorism military action in May. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has sent these dates as recommendations to the President.
Sources have indicated that the government is prepared to discuss Operation Sindoor and the preceding Pahalgam terror attack if the Opposition demands a discussion in line with parliamentary rules and regulations. This comes amid calls from some opposition parties for a special session to discuss these national security issues.
A key item on the agenda for the government is building consensus for a potential impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court Judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, over allegations of corruption. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has reportedly initiated discussions with leaders of several Opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party, and DMK, regarding this matter.
“This is not a political issue. This is a matter of corruption. This is an important issue. The government wants to take everyone along. This motion should come from all parties,” a government source told India Today TV. It is understood that most political parties have indicated they will convey their stance on the matter by Thursday.
The move to impeach Justice Varma follows a recommendation from former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to the President and Prime Minister for the judge’s removal. This was after an inquiry committee, formed following a fire incident at Justice Varma’s then Delhi residence in March 2025 which reportedly led to the discovery of a large amount of cash, indicted him. Justice Varma, who was subsequently transferred to the Allahabad High Court, has reportedly refused to resign.
For an impeachment motion against a judge to be moved in the Lok Sabha, it requires the support of at least 100 MPs, while in the Rajya Sabha, at least 50 MPs are needed. The government is keen to project a united front against alleged judicial corruption and is seeking broad support for the motion.
The upcoming Monsoon Session is expected to be politically charged, given the recent national security developments and the serious nature of the potential impeachment proceedings. The government’s legislative agenda for the session will also be closely watched.
