PM Modi Announces 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra', a High-Tech Defence Shield to Protect India From Attacks

In a major national security announcement during his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled “Mission Sudarshan Chakra,” an ambitious, multi-layered aerial defence system aimed at creating an impenetrable shield to thwart cross-border attacks and deliver a powerful retaliatory strike. The Prime Minister declared that this futuristic defence system, inspired by Lord Krishna’s divine weapon and similar in concept to Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’, will be developed and deployed by 2035.

Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi described Mission Sudarshan Chakra as a formidable system that will “not only save our country but will give a befitting reply to that enemy country.” He linked the initiative to the changing nature of modern warfare and India’s proven technological strength, referencing the recent success of “Operation Sindoor,” where Indian forces intercepted Pakistani missiles and drones targeting military bases and civilian areas. “India will build the ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ defence system to protect the nation. We will ensure the safety of our strategic installations, our cities, and our sacred places by using cutting-edge technology,” he declared.

The Prime Minister laid out a ten-year timeline for the mission, stating his government’s resolve to “expand, strengthen, and modernise our national security shield” by 2035. Emphasizing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, he affirmed that the entire system—from research and development to manufacturing—will be done indigenously, harnessing the talent of India’s youth. The scope of this security shield will extend beyond conventional military sites to protect key public spaces, including railway platforms, hospitals, and religious sites across the country.

The mission will incorporate a “Precise Target System” and integrate cutting-edge weaponry designed to “neutralise enemy targets and also hit back in a stronger way.” This announcement signals a significant strategic shift in India’s defence posture, coming in the wake of heightened tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent cross-border military exchanges.
