PM Modi Lands In Tokyo: India-Japan Summit, Talks On AI, Semiconductors In Focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday to kick off a crucial two-day visit, with the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, at the top of the agenda. This visit, Modi’s eighth to Japan since 2014 and his first annual summit with Prime Minister Ishiba, underscores the high priority India places on its “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” with the key East Asian nation.

Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister received a warm welcome from dignitaries, including Japan’s Ambassador to India, ONO Keiichi, and India’s Ambassador to Japan, Sibi George. Members of the Indian diaspora also gathered enthusiastically, waving the Indian tricolour to greet him. Shortly after landing, PM Modi posted on X, stating he looks forward to “engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.”

The summit is expected to focus on shaping the next phase of the bilateral relationship, which has seen steady progress over the past 11 years. Key discussions will revolve around expanding economic and investment ties and advancing cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and semiconductors. The leaders will also explore collaboration in sectors like clean energy, supply chain resilience, and skill development, aiming to “give new wings” to their partnership.

The visit builds on a series of recent interactions between the two leaders, most recently on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada and the ASEAN-India Summit in Laos. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit aims to consolidate the longstanding friendship between the two countries and reaffirm their shared commitment to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Following his engagements in Japan, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on August 31 and September 1.
