PM Modi Wishes Him ‘Good Health’ As Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns As Vice President

A day after the Jagdeep Dhankar resignation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Mr. Dhankhar’s extensive service to the country. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Prime Minister wished him well. “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” PM Modi wrote.
In his resignation letter, submitted with immediate effect, Mr. Dhankhar stated he was stepping down to “prioritise health care and abide by medical advice,” in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution. His five-year term was scheduled to conclude in August 2027.
The President’s office confirmed the acceptance of the resignation, which has been forwarded to the Home Ministry for the issuance of an official notification. The sudden departure on the inaugural day of the Monsoon parliamentary session has triggered widespread speculation.
Mr. Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, had recently undergone an angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi this past March. While he had been admitted to the hospital for a few days, he had since maintained an active and energetic public presence, including in his role as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
His tenure as the head of the Upper House of Parliament was eventful, marked by several confrontations with Opposition parties. The friction culminated in an unprecedented motion moved by the Opposition to impeach him. The motion to remove the sitting Vice President, a first in India’s independent history, was ultimately rejected by the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Harivansh.
