PM Modi Writes to Bangladesh’s Yunus, Stresses ‘Mutual Sensitivity’ Amid Strained Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus, extending greetings on Bangladesh’s National Day while emphasizing the need for “mutual sensitivity” to strengthen bilateral ties. The letter, which references the “spirit of the Liberation War,” comes amid strained relations over reported attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh. Both leaders are set to attend the Bimstec summit in Bangkok on April 3-4, where further discussions may take place.

In his letter, PM Modi underscored the historical ties between India and Bangladesh, stating, “The National Day of Bangladesh is a testament to our shared history and sacrifices that have built our bilateral partnership, with the spirit of the Liberation War guiding our flourishing relationship across multiple domains.” He reaffirmed India’s commitment to advancing the partnership for peace, stability, and prosperity.

India-Bangladesh relations have been tense since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, following which she fled to India. An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has taken charge amid reports of attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus. India has repeatedly raised concerns, while Dhaka insists the violence is politically motivated, not communal.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed that India is in regular contact with Bangladesh’s interim government to address these issues. The upcoming Bimstec summit in Bangkok, where both Modi and Yunus will be present, may provide an opportunity for dialogue, though a formal bilateral meeting remains uncertain, as per related web results.

The Bimstec summit could serve as a platform for India and Bangladesh to address their differences, particularly on the issue of minority safety. India’s continued diplomatic engagement with the interim government suggests ongoing efforts to stabilize ties. Further updates on bilateral discussions are expected following the summit.
