Putin Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Pledges Full Support to India in Call with PM Modi

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, strongly condemning the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and vowing support for India’s fight against terrorism.

In a phone call on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the perpetrators of the “heinous” Pahalgam terror attack must be “brought to justice.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Putin expressed solidarity with India and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

“President Putin called PM Modi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam. He expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism and stressed that the attackers and their backers must be held accountable,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Russia strategic partnership.

During the call, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India later this year for the annual bilateral summit. Modi also congratulated Putin on the 80th anniversary of Russia’s Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.

India, however, will not be sending high-level representatives to the May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow due to the security situation following the Pahalgam attack. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to skip the event, while Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth is likely to attend instead.

The terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of several Indian personnel, has drawn strong responses from both domestic and international quarters.

Prime Minister Modi, in a high-level security review meeting, directed the armed forces to take “whatever action is necessary” and assured the nation that the perpetrators “will be hunted down to the ends of the earth.”

Russia was among the first countries to label the incident as a “brutal crime,” reiterating its longstanding position against terrorism.

Following PM Modi’s statements and India’s tough posture, Pakistan has issued warnings of a potential Indian military strike. Islamabad claimed it was “prepared” to respond to any “misadventure” by India, further escalating regional tensions.

However, New Delhi has not officially confirmed any cross-border military plans. India has maintained that those responsible for the Pahalgam attack will face consequences, and diplomatic pressure is already mounting on Islamabad to act against terror groups operating from its soil.

The Pahalgam terror attack has emerged as a flashpoint in India-Pakistan relations, with regional and global powers weighing in. The latest call between the Indian and Russian leaders highlights Moscow’s continued role as a strategic ally, especially in security matters.

India and Russia have maintained strong defence and diplomatic ties for decades, with regular summits and cooperation on global platforms like BRICS and the SCO.
