Rape At IIM Calcutta Or Accident? Father Denies Daughter’s Claim, Case Takes Bizarre Turn

A sexual assault case at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) has taken a bizarre turn after the complainant’s father publicly contradicted her allegations, claiming his daughter was not raped but had merely fallen from an auto-rickshaw.

The Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested a second-year MBA student after the woman, a professional psychological counsellor, filed a handwritten complaint alleging he had drugged and raped her in his hostel room on Friday.

In her FIR lodged at the Haridevpur police station, the woman stated that the accused had invited her to the IIM Joka campus for a “counselling session.” She alleged that after having some pizza and water offered by him, she felt dizzy, lost consciousness, and realised upon waking that she had been sexually assaulted and tortured.

However, the case was thrown into confusion on Saturday afternoon when the woman’s father spoke to the media and denied all her claims. “No one has misbehaved with her, no sexual assault took place,” he said, adding that he had received a call that his daughter had fainted after an accident. “She is completely fine and is sleeping now,” he told reporters.

Despite the father’s public statement, Kolkata Police officials maintained that their investigation is proceeding based on the woman’s formal written complaint. “She submitted the handwritten complaint herself,” a police source said, adding that they are now also launching an inquiry into the father’s contradictory claims.

The accused student was produced before the Alipore court on Saturday and has been remanded to seven days in police custody.

In court, the police stated that the accused had called the complainant to his hostel room, offered her food and water which made her dizzy, and then “did forceful sexual intercourse with the complainant without her consent.” Initially booked for rape and administering drugs, the police have now added charges of wrongful confinement and assault against the student.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, coming just weeks after another student was allegedly gang-raped on the campus of a law college, raising serious concerns about women’s safety at premier educational institutions.
