S Jaishankar Gets Bulletproof Car as Security Tightened Amid Border Tensions

The Centre has enhanced External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s security with a bulletproof car and tighter surveillance at his Delhi residence, government sources confirmed.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s security has been further strengthened with the inclusion of a special bulletproof vehicle, senior government sources told Hindustan Times. The move comes amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

Security arrangements at his official residence in New Delhi have also been upgraded. Jaishankar already receives Z-category protection, which includes a team of 33 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos deployed 24×7.

According to officials, the latest measures follow an updated threat assessment by central intelligence agencies. A senior official from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “These steps have been taken based on credible inputs regarding potential threats, especially after recent developments along the border.”

Z-category security — the third-highest level of protection in India — provides at least 22 personnel, including 4–6 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, local police support, a bulletproof vehicle, and multiple escort vehicles.

In October 2023, Jaishankar’s security cover was upgraded from Y to Z category based on a threat assessment conducted by the Intelligence Bureau. The new detail included:

  • 12 armed static guards at his residence
  • 6 Personal Security Officers (PSOs)
  • 12 armed escort commandos across three shifts
  • 3 watchers working round-the-clock
  • 3 trained drivers assigned for mobility

This setup remains active and has now been fortified with enhanced protective gear and vehicles.

The heightened security arrangements come in the wake of increased Indo-Pak border tensions, particularly after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed several Indian soldiers. India responded with Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps across the Line of Control.

In this sensitive environment, high-ranking ministers, especially those involved in foreign and defense policy, are being provided with added protection, officials said.
