Senior Haryana Cop Sacked After Being Named In IPS Officer’s Suicide Note
In a major fallout from the alleged suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, the Haryana government on Saturday removed Narendra Bijarniya from his post as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rohtak. The move comes after Bijarniya was named in the explosive suicide note and in a formal police complaint filed by the deceased officer’s wife. The government has appointed Surinder Singh Bhoria as the new Rohtak SP, while Bijarniya has not been given a new posting.
This action follows the registration of an FIR against 13 officers after Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, filed a complaint demanding the arrest of senior officials for harassment and abetment of suicide. Her complaint specifically named Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor and the Rohtak SP, among others. The case has sent shockwaves through the state’s administration after Y Puran Kumar shot himself dead at his Chandigarh residence on October 7.
A nine-page suicide note recovered from his pocket accused 12 senior officers of sustained mental harassment, caste-based discrimination, and administrative bias. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now been constituted to probe the allegations.
The incident has triggered a massive political storm. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi wrote to Kumar’s wife, stating that his death is a reminder of how “even senior Dalit bureaucrats are deprived of social equality.” Other senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, have also called for immediate justice. Dalit organizations have held protests outside the Chief Minister’s residence, demanding swift action against the named officers and threatening statewide protests if justice is delayed.
