'Stop Or I'll Choke You': J&K Woman Threatened By Husband On Live Stream For Protesting AAP MLA's Arrest

A political activist in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district was threatened by her husband during a Facebook Live stream, in a shocking confrontation that has gone viral. Fatima Farooq, a former Block Development Council member, was speaking out against the detention of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mehraj Malik when her husband stormed into the frame, verbally abused her, and threatened to “choke” her if she didn’t stop the broadcast.

The dramatic incident unfolded as Farooq was addressing her viewers about the arrest of Malik under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA). “A representative of one lakh people has been booked under the Public Safety Act on the grounds that he’s a threat to public safety. How can this happen?” she said, just moments before her husband interrupted.

He furiously demanded to know why she was live-streaming, leading to a heated argument. When he asked, “Who is Mehraj Malik to you?” Farooq calmly retorted, “Mehraj Malik is no one to me, but I am standing with justice.” As he lunged for her phone, she turned the camera on him, telling her viewers, “You all can see… standing with the truth.” The confrontation reached a chilling climax when he threatened, “Stop it or I will choke your throat,” before the stream abruptly ended.

Hours later, police took both Farooq and her husband into custody. She was charged with violating prohibitory orders, while he faces potential domestic violence charges for manhandling her on camera, although officials noted she had not filed a formal complaint. In a strange twist, the same husband who threatened her was later seen pushing her in a wheelchair after she was injured during a protest against Malik’s detention.

The controversy stems from the arrest of Mehraj Malik, the lone AAP legislator in Jammu and Kashmir, who was detained under the PSA after the District Magistrate claimed his activities were a “grave threat to public order.” The move drew sharp criticism from J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who said on X, “There is no justification for detaining Mehraj Malik under PSA. If the unelected government can use its powers against an elected representative like this, how does anyone expect the people of J&K to continue to have faith in democracy?”
