Student Gangraped at Kolkata Law College, 3 Arrested After Assault Inside Campus

Three individuals, including a former student leader and two current students, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a student inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College in the city’s Kasba area. The shocking incident, which reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, has triggered a swift police investigation and ignited a political firestorm over the state of women’s safety in West Bengal.
Kolkata Police launched an investigation and registered an FIR after the victim filed a complaint at the Kasba Police Station. The alleged assault occurred within the college building between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on Tuesday. The arrests were carried out on Thursday evening and early Friday morning.
Police sources identified the arrested individuals as Monojit Mishra, 31, a former unit president at the college, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20. Mishra and Ahmed were apprehended near Talbagan Crossing on Thursday evening, while Mukherjee was arrested from his residence after midnight. The mobile phones of all three accused have been seized by investigators.
Authorities have confirmed that a preliminary medical examination of the victim has been completed. The crime scene within the college has been secured and is awaiting a detailed examination by a forensic team. Statements from several witnesses have also been recorded as part of the ongoing probe. All three accused were scheduled to be produced before the Alipore court on Friday.
The incident has drawn sharp political condemnation. BJP’s IT Cell head, Amit Malviya, described the event as “horrific” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He alleged the involvement of “a former student and two college staff members,” and further claimed a TMC member was also connected to the crime.
Drawing parallels to the recent RG Kar hospital case, Malviya accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of failing to protect women. “Crimes against women continue unabated in West Bengal,” he wrote, asserting that the state has become a “nightmare for women.” He affirmed the BJP’s support for the victim’s family and vowed to ensure the perpetrators are punished.
Responding to the allegations, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim stated he was not fully aware of the details. “It is an extremely serious matter. Let me get an update from the police and I shall speak,” he told reporters.
