Suryakumar Yadav to Lead, Shubman Gill Named Vice-Captain as India Announce Squad for Asia Cup 2025

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on Tuesday announced India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, with dynamic batsman Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team. Shubman Gill, who has been in sublime form, has been named the vice-captain for the tournament, which will be held in the UAE next month. The squad announcement, which was delayed due to inclement weather and flight diversions in Mumbai, sees the return of several key players.

Shubman Gill makes his comeback to the T20I setup after a brief hiatus, having last played the format during the Sri Lanka tour last year to concentrate on Tests and ODIs. His stellar performances in the 2025 IPL and the recent tour of England have earned him the deputy’s role.

In a major boost for the team, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is also back in the T20I fold. His last appearance was in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, and his inclusion comes after careful workload management during the recent England Test series. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, did not find a place in the main squad but has been named in the five-man standby list, which also includes Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel.

India, the defending champions, are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. Their campaign kicks off on September 10 against UAE in Dubai, followed by the high-octane clash against Pakistan three days later at the same venue.

Their final group stage match will be against Oman in Abu Dhabi on September 19. The tournament, which will be played in a T20 format, will then proceed to a Super Four stage, culminating in the final on September 28. The event was originally slated to be held in India but was shifted to the UAE due to diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan.

India’s Full Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana.

Standbys: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
