‘Tragic Chapter of Our History’: PM Modi Pays Tribute on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led the nation in observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, paying a solemn tribute to the millions who endured unimaginable suffering and loss during the “tragic chapter” of India’s Partition in 1947.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister honored the resilience and grit of the countless people who, despite facing immense upheaval and pain, found the strength to rebuild their lives from scratch.
“India observes #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit…their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh,” PM Modi wrote.
He emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s collective responsibility to foster social harmony. “This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,” he added, urging citizens to strengthen national unity.
Echoing the Prime Minister’s sentiments, BJP President and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and endured the agony of displacement. He described the Partition as a “cruel event” where citizens suffered “merciless pain of migration and, enduring inhuman torture, lost their homes, property, and lives.” Nadda highlighted that the tradition of observing this day, initiated under PM Modi’s leadership, is a vital step toward nation-building and keeping the memory of Partition alive.
“Come, on this day, let us all citizens unite to pledge to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation and give a befitting reply to anti-national forces,” Nadda’s post concluded, making a powerful call for national unity. India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14 each year to commemorate the victims and displaced individuals of the 1947 Partition.
