Trinamool Leader Piyush Ghosh Shot Dead in Birbhum, Second Political Killing in 3 Days

Trinamool Congress leader Piyush Ghosh was shot dead in West Bengal’s Birbhum district early Sunday, marking the second killing of a TMC leader in the state within three days. The incident occurred around 2 am near the Komarpur intersection in Sainthia when Ghosh, who was the agricultural officer of the party’s Sainthia Panchayat Samiti and president of the Srinidhipur area, was called out of his house and shot in the head by unidentified assailants.
According to initial reports, Ghosh had received a phone call around midnight and left his house to meet someone when he was attacked. Police reached the spot shortly after the incident, recovered the body, and sent it to Bolpur Subdistrict Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Amandeep Singh, Superintendent of Police, Birbhum, confirmed that three people, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the killing. “The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be shared as it progresses,” Singh said, urging people to remain calm as the probe continues.
Lavpur MLA and TMC leader Abhijit Singh visited the hospital and met with the bereaved family, condemning the murder. “It is a very sad incident. Our party leader was called from his house and shot dead. We demand the immediate arrest of all involved,” Singh said, expressing faith in the police investigation.
Dubrajpur BJP MLA Anup Saha blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led state government for the deteriorating law and order situation. “There have been several murders in West Bengal in the last few years, affecting both common people and TMC leaders. Mamata Banerjee is responsible for this lawlessness,” Saha said while reacting to the killing.
The murder of Ghosh follows the recent killing of another TMC leader in Bhangar, further heightening tensions in the politically volatile state. Social media platforms saw a surge in reactions, with TMC supporters demanding swift justice and opposition leaders criticising the state’s handling of law and order.
