Trump Rules Out Ceasefire, Pushes for Comprehensive ‘Peace Agreement’ After Alaska Talks

Following Donald Trump “successful” summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump has indicated that he is not pursuing an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, but rather a broader, direct “Peace Agreement” to end the conflict. Trump confirmed that his late-night discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various European leaders, including the NATO Secretary General, “went very well” and solidified this approach.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO.” He added, “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”
The US President also revealed that Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Washington D.C. on Monday afternoon. Trump expressed hope that if conditions align, a trilateral meeting involving Putin could be arranged, which he believes could “save the lives of millions of people.”
The Alaska talks between Trump and Putin, their first face-to-face meeting in years, lasted nearly three hours. While both leaders described the discussions as productive, they did not yield any immediate breakthrough in halting the war. Trump noted that “many points were agreed to” and “very few” significant issues remained unresolved, rating his talks with Putin as a “10 out of 10,” despite hinting at minor disagreements.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy confirmed his upcoming US visit to discuss “all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war” with Trump. He reiterated Ukraine’s support for a trilateral meeting and stressed the importance of European involvement in ensuring reliable security guarantees alongside the US. This diplomatic push comes after a previously tense Oval Office exchange between Trump and Zelenskyy during a past White House visit.
