UP Man Arrested for Spying for Pakistan’s ISI, Had Links to Cross-Border Smuggling
The Uttar Pradesh ATS has arrested a man from Rampur on charges of spying for Pakistan’s ISI, amid a broader crackdown on espionage networks across India.
In a major counter-intelligence operation, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) apprehended a man allegedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The accused, Shehzad, a resident of Rampur district, was arrested in Moradabad on Saturday.
Officials say Shehzad had long been under surveillance based on intelligence inputs indicating his role in smuggling and espionage. “He had established direct contact with ISI operatives and passed on sensitive information related to national security,” a senior ATS officer stated.
According to the ATS, Shehzad travelled to Pakistan multiple times and was engaged in cross-border trade of goods such as clothing, cosmetics, and spices. Authorities allege this trade was a front for espionage activities.
“His frequent visits and dealings across the border were not limited to business. He used smuggling operations to recruit and send individuals to Pakistan for ISI-linked missions,” the ATS press note added.
Investigations also revealed Shehzad facilitated financial transfers to Pakistani agents in India and helped procure Indian SIM cards for secure communications. Officials said he also arranged travel documents with assistance from ISI handlers.
“Shehzad used his network to send others from Rampur and surrounding districts to Pakistan under the pretext of trade. In reality, many were being groomed for subversive activities,” the officer said.
A case has been registered against Shehzad under Sections 148 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the ATS police station in Lucknow. He has been presented before a magistrate, and further investigations are ongoing.
The arrest follows a nationwide crackdown that has seen multiple individuals, including YouTubers and influencers, detained for alleged connections to Pakistani spy agencies.
India has increased counterintelligence efforts amid a spike in ISI-backed espionage. Intelligence agencies have been actively monitoring cross-border smuggling routes often used for intelligence leaks.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged state units to tighten vigil on foreign travel and suspicious money transfers in border districts.
