‘Uski Fitrat Hai…’ Shashi Tharoor Slams Pakistan After Ceasefire Breach

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticized Pakistan on Saturday with a poetic jab after Islamabad violated a freshly agreed ceasefire with India, just hours after it was announced.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took to social media on Saturday to express his dismay over Pakistan’s apparent breach of the ceasefire deal announced earlier in the day. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor shared a Hindi couplet:
Uski fitrat hai mukar jaane ki, uske vaade pe yakeen kaise karu” (It’s their nature to go back on their word, how can I trust their promises?).

The remark came shortly after reports emerged of drone activity and explosions in Jammu and Kashmir, signaling a possible ceasefire violation by Pakistan.

Earlier on Saturday, India and Pakistan agreed to halt hostilities across land, air, and sea after four days of escalating cross-border drone and missile strikes. The unexpected ceasefire announcement was first made by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social.

After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted. “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.

The formal confirmation came shortly after from India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Despite the agreement, late-night drone sightings and explosions were reported near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian armed forces activated air defence systems in response to what Misri later confirmed were violations of the ceasefire terms.

For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening,” Misri said during an urgent press briefing at 11 pm. “The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations. We take a very serious note of them.

Reacting earlier in the day to the ceasefire agreement, Tharoor acknowledged the need for peace but stressed the importance of countering terrorism effectively.

Peace is essential. I am very glad that India never wanted a long-term war. India wanted to teach terrorists a lesson, and I believe that lesson has been taught,” ANI quoted Tharoor as saying.

Misri, meanwhile, called on Pakistan to act with “seriousness and responsibility” and ensure the terms of the ceasefire are respected.

The ceasefire comes after heightened tensions along the border, triggered by a terrorist attack in Pahalgam earlier this week that left multiple security personnel injured. The ensuing days saw a sharp spike in hostilities, including targeted drone strikes and artillery shelling on both sides.

India has consistently maintained that its operations target terror infrastructure, not civilians, and that any retaliation is in self-defence.

With tensions still high and trust between the two nations fragile, it remains to be seen whether the ceasefire will hold. Diplomatic channels remain active, with the United States urging restraint on both sides.

India has reiterated that while it remains committed to peace, it will not hesitate to respond decisively to any further provocations.
