'Violation Of Sovereignty': PM Modi Calls Qatar Emir, Condemns Israeli Airstrikes On Doha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed “deep concern” over Israeli airstrikes in Doha, calling the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, to condemn the attack as a “violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar.” The strikes, which occurred a day earlier, were an assassination attempt on senior Hamas officials residing in the Gulf nation’s capital.

In a post on X, PM Modi detailed his conversation, stating, “Spoke with Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and expressed deep concern at the attacks in Doha. India condemns the violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly State of Qatar.” Reiterating India’s long-standing position on international disputes, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for de-escalation. “We support resolution of issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and avoiding escalation. India stands firmly in support of peace and stability in the region, and against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he added.

The Israeli attack, a rare military strike on Qatari soil, triggered widespread international condemnation. According to Hamas, at least five people were killed, including the son of senior leader Khalil al-Hayya and his office manager. Qatar, a key US ally and a central mediator in the Gaza peace process, reported that one member of its Internal Security Force was also killed. The Trump administration confirmed it was notified of the attack in advance but said it did not agree with the decision, and that a special envoy was directed to inform the Qataris of the impending strike.

During their call, PM Modi also praised Doha’s efforts in promoting regional peace, particularly its mediation role in the Gaza conflict, including initiatives for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. In response, Sheikh Tamim thanked Modi for his message of solidarity.

The leaders also welcomed the steady progress in the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership and agreed to deepen cooperation. The Prime Minister’s public statement followed a more formal one from the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday, which expressed deep concern over the development and its potential impact on regional security
