Cyclonic Circulation Over Bay Of Bengal IMD Predicts Heavy Rain Warning for 13 States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert as a cyclonic circulation forms over the Bay of Bengal. This weather system is expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even snowfall to 13 states across India, particularly in the Northeast, from February 15 to 21, 2025. Let’s break down what this means for you.

The IMD predicts a wet week ahead for Northeast India, with states like Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on alert. A cyclonic wind area forming over Nagaland at 1.5 km above sea level is driving this weather pattern. Expect light to moderate rain throughout the region, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and possible snowfall in some areas. Assam and Meghalaya are likely to see intense rain on February 19, along with thunderstorms in parts of the Northeast.

The cyclonic circulation isn’t the only weather event in play. A new western disturbance is brewing in the mountains, bringing sporadic light rain and snowfall to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on February 19-20. Meanwhile, heavy rain is expected in Rajasthan from February 17-19, and Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh will likely see showers from February 19-20. Farmers in Punjab, who recently enjoyed rainfall on Saturday, are hopeful for their Rabi crops.

Bright sunshine is warming the days, but the hilly regions continue to experience light rain and snow. In contrast, Uttar Pradesh’s western and eastern parts are expected to stay dry, with light fog possible during mornings and nights.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

  • Northeast India: Brace for a wet week with potential disruptions due to heavy rain and snow. Keep an eye on local updates, especially on February 19.
  • Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh: Prepare for rain and possible thunderstorms mid-week.
  • Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Expect light rain and snow in higher altitudes.
  • General Tips: Carry umbrellas, avoid travel during heavy downpours, and stay informed through IMD updates.
