Delhi is currently experiencing a severe cold wave, with temperatures dropping to 10°C (50°F) on Sunday morning, January 5, 2025. This cold spell has been accompanied by dense fog, significantly reducing visibility and causing major disruptions in both flight and train operations.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), a thick layer of fog has led to the disruption of flight schedules. While landings and take-offs are ongoing, flights that are not CAT III compliant—which allows aircraft to operate in low-visibility conditions—are particularly affected. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates. On Saturday, the airport experienced 19 flight diversions, several cancellations, and over 400 delays due to similar conditions.

The dense fog has also impacted train services. Trains such as the Howrah-New Delhi Duronto Express, Mahabodhi Express, Lucknow Mail, and Kathgodam Express have faced significant delays upon arrival in the national capital. Commuters are advised to check the status of their trains before heading to the station.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the cold wave conditions will persist, with the minimum temperature around 10°C (50°F) and the maximum temperature reaching approximately 18°C (64°F). A partly cloudy sky is expected, with smog and moderate fog in most areas during the morning. Wind speeds are predicted to increase to 8-10 km/h (5-6 mph) from the southeast in the afternoon, decreasing to less than 6 km/h (3.7 mph) in the evening and night. Smog or shallow to moderate fog is likely during the evening and night.

Delhi’s air quality remains a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 351, categorizing it as “very poor.” This level of pollution poses health risks, particularly to individuals with respiratory conditions. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities.

Authorities recommend that travelers check the status of flights and trains before commencing their journeys. Motorists should exercise caution due to reduced visibility on the roads. Residents are advised to stay warm and monitor weather updates regularly.
