Wife’s Mental Health Problem Killed Karnataka DGP : Son In FIR
Former Karnataka DGP Om Prakash was allegedly murdered by his wife, who had been suffering from schizophrenia, according to their son’s FIR filed with Bengaluru Police.
Kartik, son of former Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash, told police his mother Pallavi, who has battled schizophrenia for over a decade, fatally attacked his father amid delusions and imagined threats. The shocking revelation comes a day after the retired IPS officer was found stabbed to death at his residence in HSR Layout, Bengaluru.
According to the FIR lodged by Kartik, his mother believed her husband was trying to harm her and had threatened her with a firearm multiple times. Pallavi reportedly suffered from frequent episodes of anxiety and hallucinations, contributing to her deteriorating mental health.
Police have registered a case against Pallavi and Kruti, the couple’s daughter, based on Kartik’s complaint. Both women were taken into custody on Sunday evening for interrogation.
“Initial investigation suggests that the incident was domestic in nature. The victim had suffered multiple stab wounds, likely caused by a sharp weapon,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand said. “We received a call around 4:30 pm, and a team reached the scene immediately.”
Om Prakash’s body was found lying in a pool of blood, with deep injuries to his stomach and neck. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the scene.
Sources close to the family said Pallavi had been undergoing psychiatric treatment for schizophrenia for 12 years. She often told family members that Om Prakash intended to harm her, and exhibited extreme paranoia in recent months.
“She was delusional and would often get anxious over baseless thoughts,” said a source familiar with the family dynamics. “Her mental health had been a serious concern for years.”
Om Prakash, a 1981-batch IPS officer from Bihar’s Champaran district, served in key law enforcement positions across Karnataka. He was DGP between 2015 and 2017 and held prominent roles in CID, Lokayukta, and the fire service.
His sudden and tragic death has shocked former colleagues and law enforcement officials across the state.
Police are now awaiting further psychiatric evaluation of Pallavi and Kruti while continuing to gather forensic evidence and witness testimonies. No formal arrests have been made yet, as the case remains under investigation.
Mental health professionals say that long-standing, untreated schizophrenia can sometimes lead to delusional behavior, particularly under emotional or environmental stress.
