‘Won’t Tolerate Insult To Sanatana’: Lawyer Tries To Hurl Shoe At CJI In Supreme Court
In a major security breach at the Supreme Court on Monday, a lawyer attempted to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice of India (CJI), BR Gavai, during open court proceedings. The man was immediately overpowered by security personnel and escorted out of the courtroom while shouting slogans against the alleged disrespect of Sanatana Dharma. The shocking incident occurred while the bench, led by the CJI, was hearing the mentioning of cases. According to reports, the man, dressed in a lawyer’s robe, approached the dais and attempted to remove his shoe to throw it at the Chief Justice.
He was swiftly intercepted by security staff. Unfazed by the commotion, CJI Gavai urged the other lawyers present to continue with their arguments. “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” the CJI remarked, as the court’s proceedings resumed. As he was being removed from the courtroom, the man was heard shouting, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (Will not tolerate disrespect of the Sanatana Dharma). His protest is believed to be linked to comments made by CJI Gavai during a hearing on September 16.
In that case, the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea seeking the reinstallation of a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho temple complex, with the CJI terming it a “publicity interest litigation.”During that hearing, the CJI had said, “Go and ask the deity himself to do something,” and suggested that if the petitioner was “not averse to Shaivism,” he could worship the large Shiva linga present there.
These remarks had sparked a significant controversy on social media, following which the CJI had clarified that he respects all religions and his comments had been misrepresented.Following Monday’s incident, sources indicated that the Supreme Court will decide on the course of action against the lawyer after the bench concludes its session for the day.
