Rahul Gandhi Backs Trump's 'Dead Economy' Jab at India

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday backed US President Donald Trump’s scathing assessment of the Indian economy, agreeing with the “dead economy” label and launching a fierce attack on the Modi government for its alleged mismanagement.

“Yes, he is right, everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister,” Gandhi stated, responding to Trump’s comments. “I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact. The entire world knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. The BJP has finished the economy to help Adani.”

The controversy erupted after Trump, a day after imposing a 25% tariff on nearly all Indian imports, unleashed a tirade against New Delhi’s ties with Moscow, deriding both nations as “dead economies.” Gandhi seized on the remarks, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi works solely for businessman Gautam Adani. “PM Modi works only for one person: Adani. This (India-US trade) deal will take place, and PM Modi will do exactly what Trump says,” he claimed, accusing the government of destroying India’s economy, defense, and foreign policy.

The Congress leader also questioned the government’s silence on a series of claims made by Trump. “The main question is, Trump has claimed 30–32 times that he made a ceasefire. He also said that 5 Indian jets had fallen. Trump now says that he will impose 25 percent tariffs. Why is PM Modi not able to give an answer?” Gandhi asked.

Trump announced the new tariffs, effective August 1, via his social media platform, citing India’s continued oil imports from Russia and longstanding trade barriers as the primary reasons. The Indian government has officially responded by stating that it is studying the implications of the tariffs and remains committed to negotiating a fair and balanced bilateral trade agreement.
