‘Yeshu Yeshu Prophet’ Bajinder Singh Sentenced to Life in 2018 Rape Case

A Mohali court sentenced self-styled pastor Bajinder Singh, popularly known as the ‘Yeshu Yeshu Prophet,’ to life imprisonment on Tuesday in a 2018 rape case. The verdict, delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Vikrant Kumar, follows Singh’s conviction last week, marking the end of a seven-year legal battle sparked by a woman’s allegations of sexual assault.

The court found Singh guilty on March 28 under Sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The 42-year-old, currently lodged in Patiala jail, was convicted based on a complaint filed at Zirakpur police station in 2018.

The complainant accused Singh of luring her with promises of overseas travel before assaulting her at his residence in Mohali’s Sector 63.

According to the woman’s complaint, Singh raped her and recorded the act, later threatening to share the video on social media if she refused to comply with his demands. The case, registered in April 2018, drew widespread attention due to Singh’s prominence as a religious figure.

The pastor, who gained fame for his faith-healing claims, had been under scrutiny since his arrest at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in July 2018 while attempting to flee to London.

Reacting to the sentencing, the victim expressed relief but voiced safety concerns. “He (Bajinder) is a psycho and will do the same offense after coming out of jail, so I want him to stay in prison,” she said. “A lot of girls (victims) have won today. I request the DGP to ensure our security since there is a possibility of attacks on us.”

Her statement underscores the broader impact of the verdict on survivors of similar crimes.

Ahead of Tuesday’s sentencing, authorities deployed tight security around the Mohali court complex to maintain law and order. The measures were put in place anticipating potential unrest from Singh’s supporters, who had previously protested his arrest and conviction.

The court’s decision to deny Singh’s mercy plea reinforced its stance on the severity of the crime committed by a self-proclaimed religious leader.

Singh, often called the ‘Yeshu Yeshu Prophet,’ runs ‘The Church of Glory and Wisdom’ with branches in Jalandhar and Mohali. After converting to Christianity in 2012, he built a massive following through YouTube sermons and claims of performing miracles, amassing over 3.7 million subscribers online.

The 2018 case is one of several controversies surrounding the pastor, including recent allegations of sexual harassment filed in February 2025.

With Singh now facing life imprisonment, attention turns to the Punjab Police’s response to the victim’s plea for protection. The sentencing could set a precedent for accountability among influential figures, with updates expected on its broader implications.
