Zubeen Garg Death Probe: CID Detains NE Festival Organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Singer's Manager

The investigation into the death of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg has intensified significantly with the Assam CID’s special investigation team (SIT) detaining two key figures: North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and the late singer’s manager, Siddharth Sarma.

The detentions occurred in a multi-state operation overnight, marking a major breakthrough in the high-profile case.According to officials, Mahanta was taken into custody from the Delhi airport around 12:30 am on Wednesday and was subsequently flown to Guwahati. In a parallel operation, another SIT team detained Siddharth Sarma from Rajasthan.

Both are being brought to Assam for further questioning. The detentions come after more than 60 FIRs were lodged across the state against Mahanta and nearly 10 others following Garg’s death at the festival organised in Singapore. The probe against Mahanta extends beyond the singer’s death. The Assam Police initiated a separate investigation into the event manager for his alleged involvement in organised financial crimes and money laundering.

This line of inquiry was bolstered by raids on Mahanta’s residence last week, where the CID seized what it described as bundles of “incriminating” documents. The seizure reportedly included multiple PAN cards issued to a single firm, around 30 stamp seals of various companies and government offices, and papers linked to several alleged benami properties.

Shyamkanu Mahanta is the younger brother of former Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who is the current chief information commissioner, and Nani Gopal Mahanta, who served as the education advisor to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before his appointment as the vice-chancellor of Gauhati University.Meta Description:
