Zubeen Garg Death: Two Band Members Arrested For Culpable Homicide; Murder Charge Added Against Organiser
The Assam Police investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg has taken a dramatic turn with the arrest of two of his band members, bringing the total number of people in custody to four. Musician Shekharjyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta were taken into custody on Wednesday and have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.According to police, both Goswami and Mahanta were present at the yacht party in Singapore on September 19, where the 52-year-old singer was last seen going for a swim before being found dead under suspicious circumstances. These arrests follow the earlier detention of Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and the festival organiser, Shyamkanu Mahanta, who were brought to Guwahati on Wednesday after being apprehended in Delhi. In a significant escalation of the case, police have now added Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder, to the FIR against Sharma and Mahanta. This was confirmed by Munna Prasad Gupta, Special DGP of the Assam CID, who stated that both men are in 14-day police custody. “The investigation is going on, and I cannot share much detail. We have added Section 103 of the BNS in the FIR now,” Gupta said. The case, which has seen over 60 FIRs filed across Assam, continues to develop as the CID awaits the crucial viscera report from the Central Forensic Laboratory in Delhi. This report is expected to support the findings of the second post-mortem conducted in Guwahati after an initial autopsy was performed in Singapore. The sudden death of the beloved cultural icon during the North East India Festival has sent shockwaves across the region, prompting a high-level and closely-watched police probe.
