Zubeen Garg’s Second Post-Mortem on Tuesday After Public Demand: Assam CM
A second post-mortem examination will be conducted on the body of legendary singer Zubeen Garg on Tuesday to rule out any foul play in his death, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday . The decision comes after what the CM described as a demand from “certain fringe elements” on social media and follows the filing of police complaints alleging foul play by the organizers of the Singapore festival where Garg tragically died .
“We do not want to create any controversy over Zubeen, so this decision was taken,” Sarma said at a press conference, adding that the singer’s wife had consented to the procedure . The second autopsy will be conducted at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Tuesday morning in the presence of doctors from AIIMS-Guwahati . Sarma stated that while he personally felt the autopsy conducted in Singapore was technically sound and sufficient, the government chose to proceed with a second one to ensure no section of the public could “indulge in any kind of politics” over Zubeen’s death .
Garg, 52, died on Friday after a swimming incident at Lazarus Island in Singapore, where he was scheduled to perform at the North East Festival. An autopsy in Singapore listed drowning as the cause of death . However, following his death, multiple police complaints were filed in Assam against the festival organizers and Garg’s manager, which have now been transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough probe .
The chief minister said that the final journey of the cultural icon will now begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday, delayed by two hours due to the autopsy . The funeral will be held with full state honors at Kamarkuchi village on the outskirts of Guwahati . In a tribute to the singer, the Assam government has also announced that a memorial will be built on 10 bighas of land at the funeral site
