7 Women Farm Labourers Dies After Tractor-Trolley Falls Into Well in Maharashtra’s Nanded
Seven women farm labourers lost their lives after a tractor-trolley carrying them plunged into a water-filled well in Alegaon village, Nanded district, Maharashtra, on Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 7:30 am when ten labourers from Gunj village in Hingoli district were en route to work in a mung bean field in Alegaon. According to police, the driver lost control of the tractor while negotiating a narrow mud road near a well. The vehicle veered off course and overturned into the well.
The tractor’s driver reportedly jumped out before the vehicle fell and fled the scene. Three individuals — two women and one man — were rescued by nearby farmers, but seven women were trapped under the submerged tractor.
A rescue operation involving local authorities and villagers was launched. A crane was used to pull the tractor out, and the bodies of the deceased women were retrieved from the well.
The deceased have been identified as Tarabai Jadhav (35), Dhurpata Satvaji Jadhav (18), Simran Santosh Kamble (18), Saraswati Lakhan Bhurad (25), Chautrabai Madhav Parde (45), Meena Raut (25), and Jyoti Sarode (30). All were from Gunj village and had travelled to Alegaon for seasonal farm work.
District Collector and Superintendent of Police visited the site to oversee rescue efforts and assess the situation. “This is a deeply tragic incident. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause, and efforts are being made to trace the absconding driver,” a senior police officer said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. “We are ensuring that the families receive timely support, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” he stated.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the unsafe transportation of farm labourers, especially on unpaved rural routes. Authorities are also expected to review safety regulations for transporting workers in rural areas.
As the investigation continues, the police have registered a case and initiated efforts to locate and arrest the driver.
