Nagpur Riots: Lady Cop Molested, Police Attacked During Clashes, FIR Reveals
Rioters in Nagpur allegedly molested a woman police officer and pelted stones at officials during violent clashes on March 17, according to an FIR naming 51 people and 500-600 unidentified accused.
The unrest began on March 17 when Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal members protested near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The situation escalated after rumours spread that a community’s holy book was burnt, sparking widespread violence.
According to the FIR accessed by CNN-News18, a woman officer was inappropriately touched while trying to control the rioting. The document also notes that abuses were directed at police and members of the Hindu community during the chaos.
The FIR states that protesters hurled stones at vehicles, damaging cars and two-wheelers. Several women police officers sustained injuries as the mob targeted law enforcement personnel deployed to restore order.
Around 200-250 VHP and Bajrang Dal activists gathered in Mahal, raising slogans and displaying a green cloth with cow dung cakes as a symbolic gesture. Later, a separate group of 80-100 people assembled in Bhaldarpura, intensifying tensions.

An official police order highlighted that the gatherings disrupted public movement and caused distress. The violence affected roads and local areas, prompting a swift response from authorities to contain the situation.
A senior police official told PTI, “The FIR names 51 individuals along with 500-600 unknown accused involved in the rioting and attacks on police.” The document outlines the severity of the violence that unfolded on March 17.
As of Wednesday, March 19, Nagpur’s law and order situation is under control, a senior official confirmed to PTI. However, a curfew remains in place across sensitive areas to prevent further unrest.
Authorities are investigating the incident, with the FIR serving as a key document to identify and prosecute the accused. The curfew will continue until the situation stabilizes, with police maintaining heightened vigilance.
