Nagpur Violence: Bulldozer Action Begins at Key Suspect Fahim Khan’s Illegal Property

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) initiated the demolition of a double-storied house belonging to Fahim Khan, the alleged mastermind of the recent Nagpur riots, on Monday. The action follows Khan’s failure to comply with a 24-hour ultimatum to remove the illegal structure in Sanjay Bagh Colony. This marks the first such razing of a riot accused’s property by the civic body.

NMC officials inspected Khan’s property on March 20 and found it in violation of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. The house, reportedly encroaching on municipal land, was targeted after Khan, currently in custody, failed to act on the civic notice. The demolition began under heavy police presence to ensure order.

The demolition comes days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, “Bulldozers will run if the law permits,” responding to queries on adopting a justice model similar to Uttar Pradesh’s under CM Yogi Adityanath. The BJP-led Mahayuti government has emphasized strict action against those involved in the violence that erupted on March 17 over the Aurangzeb grave row.

The violence in Nagpur stemmed from clashes between two groups, triggered by the alleged burning of a religious text, injuring 40 people. One victim succumbed to injuries on Saturday, intensifying calls for justice. On Saturday, Nagpur police sealed two shops linked to rioters associated with Khan’s Minority Democratic Party (MDP).

Curfew was lifted across riot-affected areas on Sunday, following a week of unrest. CM Fadnavis noted that 80% of the city remained unaffected, emphasizing efforts to restore normalcy. The demolition drive signals the administration’s intent to crack down on those involved in the violence while addressing illegal constructions.

With Khan’s property demolition underway, authorities are expected to continue probes into other riot-related violations. The focus remains on maintaining peace in Nagpur, with further updates awaited on legal proceedings against the accused and compensation for victims.
