Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday detailed the sequence of events in the March 17 Nagpur clashes, attributing the violence to rumours following the burning of Aurangzeb’s tomb replica, and promised stringent action against rioters, including property seizures.

Violence broke out in Nagpur on March 17 after a right-wing group burnt a replica of Aurangzeb’s tomb, sparking rumours of a holy ‘chadar’ being desecrated. The unrest injured 40 people, including police, with one fatality reported on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference in Nagpur Police Bhawan, Fadnavis said, “The replica of Aurangzeb’s tomb was burnt, followed by rumours spread via social media that a holy ‘chadar’ was torched.” He noted the police controlled the situation within 4-5 hours despite the chaos.

Fadnavis confirmed that 104 individuals, including 11 minors, have faced action, with more arrests planned. “The rioters pelted stones, torched vehicles, and attacked shops,” he said, adding that 68 inflammatory social media posts were identified and removed.

The CM assured compensation for damaged vehicles within 3-4 days. He added, “The cost of damages will be recovered from rioters; if they refuse, their properties will be sold, and bulldozers may be used,” signaling a tough stance on accountability.

Several police personnel, including three DCP-rank officers, were injured during the clashes. Fadnavis clarified, “Stones were hurled at a female constable, but molestation reports are false,” emphasizing efforts to curb misinformation.

Addressing speculation of a foreign link, Fadnavis stated, “It’s too early to confirm a Bangladeshi angle in the violence; the probe is ongoing.” He stressed that the unrest does not reflect Nagpur’s peaceful culture, unseen since 1992.

Fadnavis announced that curfew restrictions, imposed after the violence, will be eased in stages starting Saturday. He urged citizens to cooperate as the administration works to restore normalcy in the city.

The investigation continues to uncover the full scope of the conspiracy, with police targeting remaining rioters and social media instigators. Further updates on the probe and compensation process are expected soon as Nagpur aims to recover from the unrest.
